Bradbury, Ray Fahrenheit 451
Log Entry #1
This story is set to take place in a distant future. Where books are burned and firemen...are the ones causing fires! Through these they are control by the government and sort of brainwashed to believe books are evil. So far this story has introduced us to Guy Montag, a fireman who passionately loves his job , as told in the story,he's 'happily' married and is 'satisfied' with his life.
We are also introduced to Clarisse McClellan, a young teenage girl who can see through Montag. She introduces herself as a young seventeen year old who is crazy. She easily changes subjects and so far has spoke about herself freely telling the story of how her uncle was arrested twice. It is also later revealed that Montag cannot stop thinking about her, comparing her to a clock.
HE had first met her on the corner when walking home, that same corner he felt someone waited to jump him or something. But what is significant so far in these pages is that, Montag, who believes he is so happy with his life, after being asked by Clarisse, starts questioning himself. He cannot stop thinking about her and her soft white features that he begins to wonder about her. Comparing to her like she is a mirror, reflecting people. He understood the power of identification she held and felt like she was a marionette while he was watching in the audience.
When she asked about houses once being prone to fires, Montag laughed and replied with, "No, that's not true. They have been fireproof since the beginning." He had used many examples of allusions, similes and metaphors. For example, when he had described Clarisse he compared her to mirrors, clocks, marionettes, and slender. And how Montag and Clarisse were dressed. Montag in all black, a symbol of death(?), no hope, void, abyss, soullessness,(my mom) and depth. Clarisse is dressed in white, meaning pure, hope, good, life, beginnings and a godly presence of sorts.
