POL Questions
1) Determine the basic design of the poem by considering the who, what, when, where, and why of the dramatic situation.
* Johannes Vermeer was a Dutch master painter known for his attention to detail and his exceptionally sensitive handling of light, he was mentioned as Vermeer in Robert's poem. I believe Robert is referencing to one of Vermeer's paintings. The basic design is probably referencing to Lowell's previous work and how he created it.
2) What is being dramatized? What conflicts or themes does the poem present, address, or question?
* He states that he wants to create work from imagination but his question of recalled seems to cast doubt over his desire to do so.
3) Who is the speaker? Define and describe the speaker and his/her voice. What does the speaker say? Who is the audience? Are other characters involved?
*The speaker I would say is Robert's persona, it might actually be Robert. But his persona is for a sure.
4) What happens in the poem? Consider the plot or basic design of the action. How are the dramatized conflicts or themes introduced, sustained, resolved, etc.?
*Robert throughout the poem is explaining and giving detail of what he does in his works of poetry. It shows hi writing style and how he struggles to create his work.
5) When does the action occur? What is the date and/or time of day?
* During day or early evening.
6) Where is the speaker? Describe the physical location of the dramatic moment.
*N/A (If anything Robert is writing this down somewhere peaceful, or stressful, maybe his workbench. In his mind perhaps?)
7) Why does the speaker feel compelled to speak at this moment? What is his/her motivation?
To express what he goes through to write each of his poems.
