Scout is trying a new way to get Atticus to drop her out of school, cursing. She thinks if she picks up the slang "adult" terms that her father will realize that she can't possible go to an environment like that! But nonetheless Atticus picks up on it and doesn't fall for it. Scout learns during school recess her father is defending a colored person in court and is constantly picked on about it by Cecil Jacob, She doesn't fight him, instead lays down her guns and walks away; walking away from a fight for the first time in her life. During Christmas vacation Uncle Jack has a talk with her about her choice of language. During the fest at the Finch Landing Scout beats up her second cousin. She runs away but is caught by Uncle Jack and spanked. When returning home she locks herself in her room. Later, Jack and Scout talked about what happened and Jack came to the understanding of Scout's; he even starts to feel guilty of it all.
