Why did Elie lie to Stein about his knowledge of the man’s family?

To keep Stein from knowing anything bad about his family, Elie doesn’t even know if they are dead, he only assumes. To save him from unneeded heartbreak or a harsh cold truth that could kill a man, he lied. To save him.
