Elie is whipped in consequence for having saw Idek send all the workers out to work in the fields; Elie went against orders and went back to the warehouse to retrieve so pieces of bread laying about. He hears a noise and finds Idek half naked with a little Polish girl. Elie laughs and because of this he is caught and Idek tells him he shall wait and see his punishment.

At the end of the chapter, explain the quote: “Where is He? Here He is—He is hanging here on this gallows…”.

Elie means that God is hanging as the pipel. The pipel is hanging slipping between life and death, not keeping a choice made by the executioner to die. Since God has not kept any of his promises so far he is weaving that into how the pipel is dying. How God would take the children from danger first.
