Literary Device- THEME

Jem and Scout were amazed because the last time it snowed was in 1885. Jem made a snowman that looked like Mr. Avery by taking some snow from Miss Maudie's yard. Miss Maudie loved that Jem was taking the snow because it killed her plants. Jem made the snowman out of earth first(black), and then covered it up with snow(white) . Anyone passing by would think that it was made entirely of snow, but Jem and Scout knew that there wasn't enough snow to make a real one so big. It represented how the neighborhood didn't accept black people, and how whites were used to cover up all the "flaws" of black people, even though the blacks held them all together and was the base of their lives.

  1. What flaws did white people cover up? I think you on to something about white people trying to "cover" or make the black people of the community "disappear" or "simulated" into white culture (though not accepted). Also, the snow is a symbol of purity - particularly for Scout and Jem, but they will be exposed to the differences in the way whites treat blacks even though everyone is made up of "earth". Snow could also be a symbol of "change".
