Literary Device- THEME
Jem and Scout were amazed because the last time it snowed was in 1885. Jem made a snowman that looked like Mr. Avery by taking some snow from Miss Maudie's yard. Miss Maudie loved that Jem was taking the snow because it killed her plants. Jem made the snowman out of earth first(black), and then covered it up with snow(white) . Anyone passing by would think that it was made entirely of snow, but Jem and Scout knew that there wasn't enough snow to make a real one so big. It represented how the neighborhood didn't accept black people, and how whites were used to cover up all the "flaws" of black people, even though the blacks held them all together and was the base of their lives.

She thinks if she picks up the slang "adult" terms that her father will realize that she can't possible go to an environment like that! But nonetheless Atticus picks up on it and doesn't fall for it. Scout learns during school recess her father is defending a colored person in court and is constantly picked on about it by Cecil Jacob, She doesn't fight him, instead lays down her guns and walks away; walking away from a fight for the first time in her life. During Christmas vacation Uncle Jack has a talk with her about her choice of language. During the fest at the Finch Landing Scout beats up her second cousin.
